Ok, so I am squirting water in my son Benjamin's mouth on Mon night with a squirt bottle and all the sudden I noticed his Uvula was gone. (you know that thing that hangs down in the back of your throat?) So I got a tongue depressor and a flashlight, pinned him down on the couch and took a look.
This is Tonsillitis
This image is what I saw, only bigger!! So anyway, imagine if you would the left tonsil so big, it was totally covering up his uvula. The right one was almost touching it as well, his throat looked like it was closing up. In all fairness, about a month ago I noticed his tonsils were kind of big, but he still had a Uvula and he wasn't acting sick so I didn't think anymore about it until Mon night. Well my hubby freaked when he saw them and was ready to go to the ER right then. We calmed down and thought about it and decided that we would wait until morning, try to get in to see his Doc, then go to ER if we had to. After all He was eating and drinking with no problems.
(This is what healthy tonsils look like)
So after a very sleepless night with Ben in between us kicking and playing, we got up and the Doc saw us at 8:15am. She looked in his mouth and said, "Now I know they look huge but it is very normal for toddlers to have large tonsils. They actually grow smaller as the child gets bigger." She told us to keep an eye on them, if we noticed any white patches, fever, redness or a refusal to eat or drink we should bring him in.
So in other words we freaked out over nothing!!! You'd think after 5 kids I would have come across this problem before and known what to do. But leave it to the last kid to have abnormal things happen to him!!!
So that was my day on Tuesday, and why it was nap day for us :)
Grateful for:
1. My VERY Accommodating Pediatrician.
2. A hubby who offered to stay home and help with the kids for the Dr. appt.
3. That I didn't have to spend the night in the ER, or the next day waiting for my son to get out of surgery.
4. I'm glad it's Thursday, one more day left this week of State testing in school!
5. For my neighbor who is a fellow night owl, and the great gab session last night :)
